SOUTH REGION MIDDLE SCHOOL NO. 6

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles Unified School District

Designed to relieve overcrowding at two nearby schools, CSDA designed the new South Region Middle School No. 6, located in the south central district of Los Angeles on an urban 7.1-acre site. The 160,000-SF school will serve 1,400 students and includes 52 classrooms, an administration building, a library/media center, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose building, food service facilities, and performing arts spaces. Classrooms are stacked vertically in a three-story structure to provide Small Learning Communities (SLCs), and to free open space for playfields and other communal school activities. Parking for 100 cars is provided in a below-grade parking structure. Long-term flexible, sustainable, and durable design strategies were used to address the District's evolving learning approaches and offer opportunities to open up such components as the gymnasium and multi-purpose building to the community. Construction of the new school is expected to be completed in 2008 at an estimated cost of approximately $49 Million.
